You know those really cute crochet stuffed animals and really aesthetic crochet blankets you see everywhere? Well, I was totally crazy about them and desperately wanted to learn to make things like that. I wanted to get into crochet. So, I dragged my grandma (who had come for a few days) to hobbycraft, and made my way to the crochet/knitting section.
I had already tried knitting when I was visiting my great grandma, and I quite enjoyed it, but from what I saw, crocheting looked easier, quicker, more modern and more fun. I don't know if that's completely true, but I definitely thought so.
Back to hobbycraft, I was wandering in the crocheting/knitting section, where there were at least 50 different types and colours of yarn, and at least 10 different size and shape hooks. I didn't know where to start, so I asked a hobbycraft employee, and she told me to start with acrylic yarn, which is one of the most popular types. She also told me that crochet hooks have different sizes such as 4mm, 6mm, and so on. She said I first had to choose a yarn, and on the yarn label it would say what size crochet hook I needed to use, and then I should get that size hook.
This may sound like obvious information to some people, but it was completely knew to me. I looked at the different types, and most acrylic yarns used a 4mm hook. I also found plush yarns, which are thicker, fluffier yarns used to make those cute fluffy stuffed animals. They used 5mm or 6mm size hooks. I got a few balls of yarn and 3 different sized hooks, 4mm, 6mm and 8mm.
When I got home, I immediately started looking at a simple tutorial on single crochet stitches and chains. I eventually made something that looked like this.
I also practiced double or treble crochet stitches, but I don't have that scrap piece anymore.
It didn't look like much, but it was a start. I got more and more into crochet, and using a tutorial from youtube, I made my first amigurumi octopus (amigurumi is the name used for crochet plushies.) It looked a bit better⬇
I crocheted the octopus with some old plush yarn I found in my drawer, and I stuffed it with some cotton pads, because I had completely forgotten to buy filling for plushies when I was at hobbycraft. The eyes were 2 round head clips that I had coloured in black, but you can see the black pen starting to some off.
This is the tutorial video link that I used:
I got more and more into crocheting, and I made some more octopuses, a mini whale, a penguin and a popping mushroom. You can see some pics of them all below.
I get into further detail on my other posts where I will also post the video link so you can make these animals too.
It was quite simple to get into crochet, but you do need some time and patience and understanding if you want to be happy with your projects, Anyone really can get get into crochet, and there are so many different things you can make and patterns you can follow, not only plushies. Crocheting can be done anywhere at any time, so I definitely recommend starting crochet if you are look for a fun hobby to take up. But remember, giving up or losing hope won't get you anywhere.
That's it from me, have a nice day🫶, bye!
